EV News: The Driver Update

The electric vehicle (EV) industry is changing constantly. Zest is keeping current and prospective drivers up to date with some of the developments that will be shaping the industry going forward.

Affordable used EVs

While more affordable new EVs are coming on-sale soon, the used market already offers bargains. Tesla Model 3s and Kia e-Niros which are only a few years old can now be bought for £14,000. These cars will do an impressive 250-300 miles on a single charge.

Used Teslas and Kias for this price have roughly 100,000 miles on the clock but stretching your budget to £20,000 gets you a more recent model with around 55,000 miles. While high mileage can be a concern when buying a used car, Teslas used as taxis often reach 440,000 miles, so drivers shouldn’t be discouraged. Thanks to a reasonably priced second-hand EV market, the switch to electric is becoming more affordable.

Plugging the EV skills gap

The transition to EVs is bringing new job opportunities with it. Addressing these new roles, Nissan has led in the creation of MADE NE, a training hub which aims to boost skills in the automotive sector. The site, based in Sunderland, has been part funded by the North East Combined Authority and is focused on training a workforce for the EV and battery technology sectors. As such, the workforce of tomorrow will be upskilled in all things EV, ready to take on the new opportunities.
