North Yorkshire charged adventures

If you’re wondering what to do this summer, we’re uncovering some of the trails, activities and attractions you could explore near Zest’s charge points.

In this edition, we're focusing on North Yorkshire, a region with countryside, historic sites, and charming towns, as well as a number of Zest charge points.

Helmsley

Charger location: Cleveland Way Car Park, 17 Cleveland Wy, Helmsley, York YO62 5AZ

Did you know you can take a trail through ancient woodlands, marshy grassland, and species-rich meadows while your EV charges? Helmsley Circular Route is one of six new routes as part of the Ryevitalise Landscape Partnership Scheme, encouraging people to explore the River Rye. The walk is 3.6 miles and will take around 1 hour 25 minutes to complete.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for a longer walk why not try the Helmsley and Rievaulx Abbey route? This 7-mile circular route takes 4hours to complete and climbs gently for views of the town and castle before dropping down through bluebell woods to reach the village and ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. 

Pickering

Charger location: Eastgate Car Park, Pickering, YO18 7DP

William the Conqueror's wooden castle was rebuilt in stone in Pickering beginning 1180 and has undergone very few alterations since. The castle offers breath taking views from the top of the keep. It features meadows of wildflowers and unique wildlife alongside the centuries-old story of the castle, making it the perfect place to visit this summer.

After a walk around the castle, why not visit Pickering Community Park, a vibrant hub of fun activities.

Located just a 14-minute walk from Pickering Castle, the attraction features a large wooden adventure playground with castle and train themes providing a safe and engaging environment for kids to play, climb, and explore. The equipment is suitable for children of all ages with accessible pieces for those with disabilities including wheelchair-accessible swings, ramps, and sensory play elements designed to accommodate diverse needs.

 

Malton

Charger location: Water Lane Car Park, Railway St, Malton YO17 7NR

Scampston Walled Garden

Scampston Walled Garden, built in 1600, is renowned for its stunning landscape and historical significance.

They offer a range of themed walks that designed to provide visitors with an immersive experience, offering insights into the garden's history, architecture, and diverse plant life. From historical to botanical walks, there’s plenty to keep you entertained for the whole day.

A great place to start is the short Cascade Circuit Walk, a route less than 1 mile around the woodland gardens and lakes that surround the hall.

Butterwick Alpaca Retreat and Trekking

At Butterwick Alpaca Retreat, guests  have the opportunity to engage in alpaca walking experiences, where they can stroll through scenic trails accompanied by these gentle creatures. The retreat is open from 10 am to 4 pm and the walk is between 1-2 hours.

This activity not only offers a chance to connect with nature but also allows participants to interact closely with the alpacas, learning about their behaviours and personalities from their knowledgeable guides.
