The electric vehicle (EV) industry is constantly evolving. Zest is keeping current and prospective EV drivers up to date with the major developments we believe will be shaping the industry going forward.
The UK has surpassed 75,000 public EV chargers, marking a significant milestone in the nation's infrastructure development. The UK’s charging industry is barely ten years old, and the latest figures reflect a 32% year-on-year growth for February.
The expansion of public charging in the UK is making EV ownership more convenient, especially for those without home charging facilities. Also, a more extensive network increases public confidence and means concerns around battery range are alleviated.
Ultimately, the continued growth of public charging networks underscores the UK's dedication to promoting sustainable transportation and supports the transition towards EVs.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has published its March 2025 figures for new car sales. It reported that in the third month of the year, EV registrations reached 69,313, a 43.2% increase compared to March 2024. This means EVs represented 19.4% of all new car registrations and makes it the best month on record for new EV sales.
The substantial rise in new EV registrations underscores a strong and growing interest in electric vehicles among UK consumers. This is further supported by a recent AA survey which found over half of drivers are likely or very likely to choose an EV as their next car.
The same survey found that drivers still harbour misconceptions and a lack of knowledge about EVs. As such, the AA has suggested the need for better EV education, lower costs and financial incentives, alongside improved public charging infrastructure and signage to support both new and existing drivers.
Charging technology is continuously advancing. Evidence of this comes in the form of a new ultra-rapid charger unveiled by Chinese EV manufacturer BYD. The charger, which can deliver 1000 kW of power, will have the potential to add 249 miles of range in five minutes to compatible cars in the future. This development is a positive example of the industry innovating as manufacturers recognise that charging infrastructure is needed as part of daily life.
Autotrader has published a list of every new EV available in the UK for under £25,000. It features a variety of models, including compact city cars and spacious family vehicles, showing there are options to suit every driver’s needs. Citroën’s e-c3 Aircross was commended for its spacious interior, comfort, and overall good value, priced from £22,990. Likewise, the Renault 5 hatchback was praised for its attractive retro design, interior, quality, and driving dynamics. Uniquely, this French car features a baguette holder! The Renault has a starting price of £22,995.
The growing range of EV models available at lower prices signifies a positive shift in the EV market, offering more consumers the opportunity to participate in sustainable transportation without compromising on choice or quality.
